What is puzzle chess?
Puzzle chess is a new format of speed puzzling where every person puzzles solo. You will be competing as an individual, rather than in a pair.
How does a game work?
Each round, you will be assigned a seat and an opponent, and you will be given a new 100-piece puzzle to work on.
You and your opponent will assemble the border together, ensure all remaining pieces are face up, then stop and get a chess clock ready (we recommend a phone app - please download one before the event). You will only need one clock for the two of you.
When everyone is ready, we'll call out "ready, set, go!" and you will start your chess clock. Each player places one piece in the puzzle, then taps the chess clock - that activates the clock for the other player, and they must now place a piece in the puzzle.
You may place your piece anywhere in the puzzle - players do not have designated zones - but the piece must interlock with an existing piece; you cannot place a piece with no connections.
Players continue like this, taking turns placing one single piece at a time, until the puzzle is complete. When the puzzle is finished, the person who has taken less time to finish their half of the puzzle wins!
How does the tournament work?
This is a multi-round tournament!
Each round is single-elimination. That means if you win, you continue competing in the next round. If you lose, you're out of the competition - BUT you are still welcome to continue puzzling for the first 3 rounds!
